PureVPN Review

Rated 2.4 out of 5
2.4 out of 5 stars (based on 275 reviews)

We want to recommend PureVPN, as the company is a great option for SSTP (a very secure encryption method). It also offers dedicated IP addresses and a few other awesome features. Unfortunately, we cannot push for a VPN with bad customer support—which is the case with PureVPN—especially to those who are not tech savvy and frequently need help.

PureVPN Review Summary

PureVPN provides an unlimited VPN Service with 2,000+ servers in 140+ different countries, and it supports all major protocols and devices. The PureVPN software is very easy to use and has tons of great features, including a traffic log chart, auto-reconnection, a kill switch, and split tunneling.

Unfortunately, PureVPN’s customer support is problematic. We’ve contacted PureVPN’s support on multiple occasions, only to receive week-late replies or no replies at all. If you were to have any issues or need to cancel, you’d be out of luck!

The provider’s no-logging policy was also tested (and failed) when it aided an FBI investigation in 2017 (see the Policies & Logging tab). Overall, PureVPN offers great features, but its customer support needs to be improved. If you’re searching for a comparable VPN with excellent support and a more trustworthy privacy policy, check out other VPN providers we’ve tested by clicking on the link below.

PureVPN VPN Features

The Pure VPN software is easy to install. It comes in a configuration for any type of OS or device you care to name, and a few you likely don’t even know. The software also has some great features built into it, and they’re quite easy to use:

  • Antivirus/Antimalware
  • Ad blocking
  • Internet kill switch
  • Split tunneling
  • NAT Firewall
  • DDoS protection
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • P2P enabled
  • Ozone
  • IPv6 leak protection
  • DNS leak protection
  • WebRTC leak protection

There are also add-on features that you get to enjoy at an additional cost:

  • Dedicated IP addresses
  • Port forwarding
  • DDoS protection
  • P2P protection

These are all great bonus features on top of the essentials like a VPN kill switch, split tunneling, and protection from leaks. PureVPN is one of the most feature-rich providers we’ve reviewed.

PureVPN SERVERS & COUNTRIES

PureVPN has more than 2,000 servers and 180 server locations in 140 countries worldwide. Below is a breakdown of servers in each region:

  • North America: 662 servers
  • Europe: 801 servers
  • Asia: 321 servers
  • Africa: 150 servers
  • Oceania: 93 servers
  • South America: 84 servers
  • Central America: 12 servers

This number changes often, but at the time of this review (January 31, 2019)they displayed these numbers. There certainly is a wide selection of servers that will help ensure that you get a fast and reliable connection. Also, the more server locations, the more exclusive content you can unlock.

Reliability & Speed Tests

PureVPN is faster than most VPN providers we tested. They own their entire network and control their own servers. They have no third parties interferring, and are thus able to ensure fast servers on their own with no outside interference. When connected, you can typically expect speeds with 90% of your maximum without a VPN. This compares well to most other VPNs, and puts them in the upper range speed-wise.

Pricing and Payments

Pure VPN has some of the most reasonable pricing plans that we have seen:

  • $3.33 per month on a one-year plan. You will sign up for one year with all payments upfront.
  • $8.00 per month on a three-month plan. You are billed in full every three months.
  • $10.95 per month, billed monthly.

These are some of the better VPN pricing plans that we have seen. While the one-year plan is the lowest price point and is quite attractive, the single-month service is on the expensive side. PureVPN does offer a 31-day money-back guarantee, which gives you enough time to decide if the service is for you or not.

Support

We have nothing against PureVPN, but after recently experiencing bad customer support, and receiving complaints from customers in our feedback on the site, we have to rate PureVPN’s support poorly.

We contacted PureVPN in regards to an issue. An automated reply was sent right away, telling us that we should expect a reply within a few hours. We never did. We decided to contact customer support again using our alias (that we used to purchase PureVPN’s service) regarding a similar issue… Silence again! We tried for a third time, this time posing as a potential customer. Bam! A response came right away.

In short, our experience showed that there is customer support. However, it’s only there to sell the company’s service and will ignore you if you have an issue. The logic behind this makes no sense, but this fact alone ruins everything else that was good about this company.

PureVPN support methods

PureVPN have support, when they respond, in these ways:

  • FAQs & Tutorials: One of the most extensive tutorial and FAQ sections we’ve found. If your question isn’t answered here, good luck to you.
  • Email Support: Email tickets are the primary way of contacting them, and were what we had a serious issue with. Good luck to you if you need to contact them through it as our experience is that they are more sales staff than support staff.
  • Live chat: Not to be used for anything serious, can be more trouble than it’s worth.

Although the FAQs and tutorials are substantial, there will still come a time when you really need to talk to a real human. Based on our experience, customer support is just not PureVPN’s strength.

POLICIES & LOGGING

PureVPN keeps you anonymous and secure whenever you’re online, and it only logs a minimal amount of information. PureVPN logs server connection attempts only to track abuses. It does not log which websites you visit or outgoing traffic.

However, the provider’s logging policy came under fire in late 2017 when its logs helped FBI track Ryan Lin, a cyber stalker who had been harassing and hacking his victims’ accounts. PureVPN’s logs aided the prosecution’s case, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

This incident led PureVPN to update its privacy policy to this:

purevpn logging policy update

The provider explained that it only keeps network logs—bandwidth consumption and user timestamps, among others. It doesn’t keep logs that contain any personal information and browsing habits of users. However, the FBI case somehow casts a shadow over PureVPN’s “no logging” policy.

Expert Recommendation

We want to recommend PureVPN, as the company is a great option for SSTP (a very secure encryption method). It also offers dedicated IP addresses and a few other awesome features. Unfortunately, we cannot push for a VPN with bad customer support—which is the case with PureVPN—especially to those who are not tech savvy and frequently need help.

We also can’t recommend a provider whose logging policy is dubious. Although we condemn the use of VPNs for criminal activities, it’s still alarming to know that PureVPN can actually help any third party trace a user. They caught a stalker, but they could just as easily aid a stalker of someone who is trying to hide themselves.

There are plenty of alternatives that you’ll find in our Top 10 VPN list (link below). If you absolutely need some of PureVPN’s unique features, we’d say tread carefully as the features are also available on other VPN providers with better customer support.

BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY – I had two problems with purevpn, unable to make connection with selected country and the worst was cancellation. I choose not to renew my subscription, had my replies to emails wanting subscription payment that I did not want the product ignored, found the service cancellation process listed on their website does not exist and continually get emails requesting payment. I pay online with debit card that has $5 balance until I need to purchase something otherwise companies like Purevpn will withdraw payments regardless of cancelled subscription so BE AWARE

It all seems to work well. The one issue I do have is that the OSX client (latest) drops the connection frequently and doesn’t try to reconnect or give me a warning so I’m “out there naked.” Droid client is better but I think gives up eventually. Your online chat service is awesome. Ryan helped me today. Very courteous and professional and I got a great deal.

The OSX clients — all of them — drop the connection w/o warning or attempt to reconnect. That leaves me out there “naked.” Droid connection is much better but eventually seems to give up w/o notification. Service in chat is amazing. Always there and always helpful. I worked with Ryan today. He was awesome. Very courteous and professional. I am not Ryan’s mom. 🙂

I was quite frustrated as the user authentication box was not appearing whenever I opened up Pure and I could not connect. O’Brien on the live chat quickly sorted this out and problem solved. I cant just quit the app, I actually need to log out. There you go! All working fine now.

Connection problems & poor tech help

Rated 2 out of 5

Connection problems & poor tech help. I’ve used this VPN for 3 yrs. They admitted a year ago that it has issues with Windows 10 staying connected. Is that my fault to be using the latest Windows operating system? You ask for help and it takes days and you get an email that says to log off then back on which hasn’t solved my present problem. It’s frozen. The screen to log on is black. Nobody there follows up and asks you “Did that solve your problem?”. I told them I’m not happy with their VPN but they say “Thank you for choosing us for your security needs”. I loved them years ago but their issues with Windows 10 has not been resolved. No patches or solutions, it just disconnects and in a day’s time you’ll have to log back on many times. My YouTube streams are constantly paused until it loads, plays some, then pauses over and over again. I’m now looking into another VPN service. I don’t know how it’s showing 5/5 stars on this review site. I’ll try to uninstall/reinstall and if that improves it I’ll move my ratings up but for now I’m only giving it 2 stars. They might be too busy to help, unable to help or they’ve lost their passion to help their customers.

This app absolutely will not stay connected. It may have great features but it is very sparse on its servers. UPDATE: While trying to renew my service, I ran into tons more problems. The worst part is their CHAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY ARE TOTALLY INEPT. Even the lead reps don’t have a clue how to get this thing configured so I can get into my account and renew. You’d think they could get the money thing right … but apparently not.

Pros: The additional personal IP location service is effective for accessing the Streaming pages and the connection speed is high. Fully encrypt your geolocation and IP address.
Cons: The Android application has interruptions and Internet speed is also a bit affected. Sometimes problems arise with connection protocols, however, the support service is fast and live. Additional services make the monthly payment expensive compared to other VPN programs.
Overall: Excellent for maintaining privacy and protection. It has many quality servers in the main countries and cities of the world.

DNS leak tests and IP leak checking website’s, consistenly show good performance with PureVPN. Speed is good as well and the interface is easy to navigate, it would be nice if it was more specific with some details, but a little nitpick in an otherwise good product.

Pros: PureVPN provides total anonymity to your connection to the Internet. It can be used to mask Geo-locating and other Internet tools trying to pin down where you are connected.
Cons: Very few. There are certain locations in Asia that advertise as ready to connect, but the attempts time out. I very minor annoyance at worst.
Overall: It has been a great tool for my associates to use when not wanting to advertise what City/State they are connected from.

This is a really poor performing app and it looks like its getting worse and worse by the day. Slow and crashes regularly on Android tv especially. Worst app I have seen. Regardless of the platform..I use it on Windows, Android and Android tv. Also regardless of which server or country I connect to performance is bad bad bad. I definitely want to discontinue my service with this crowd. Wish there was a way to give it zero stars.

said do what you want and report to whoever you want.
They even said that if i try to request the money back from my bank they will challenge it “Please proceed to report this charge to your bank and we will challenge the dispute with bank with above mentioned details.”
Stay away from this scam site.
Currently they answered that they will refund me, we will see if it’s true and accordingly i will update the review.

I’m a “lifetime” subscriber of PureVPN. I subscribed years ago when it was a great price and the service was actually not terrible. Not that I ever use it anymore since it went from mediocre to horrifically terrible. Non-existent customer support. Horrendously long connection times (if you can connect at all). Dial up modem speeds. If their staff (do they even have staff?) spent as much time on customer support as they did writing fake Trustpilot reviews they might actually upgrade themselves back to mediocre status.
Now everybody pay close attention because by tomorrow this review will be buried under a flurry of new 5 star “reviews” posted under account names that were newly created with absolutely no Trustpilot history.

They have a 31 days money back guarantee. However, they are annoyingly super persistent when you want to cancel your subscription and get your money back because you don’t like their service or you no longer want to use a VPN. WHAT’S WORSE IS if you talk to an agent to cancel your subscription and it shows as “cancelled”. YOU WILL STILL GET CHARGED. Their excuse is ‘oh, it’s because the auto-recurring is not disabled’. THAT’S NOT SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN IF IT’S CANCELLED. I CALL BS.

July 16, 2019

Why take chances with your online security? If you think that Google, Facebook, and Twitter have your best interests in mind, think again. All they care about is gather information about you when you are on the internet, sending texts, or tweeting. Using PureVPN helps hide your identity when you’re online. It keeps tech companies from building a profile of you regarding where you go on the internet and what you text or tweet. If you value your security, you should use a VPN to hide your tracks and if you’re going to use a VPN, why not use the best? PureVPN works to keep your online life secure and not available for sale to the highest bidder.

I found this service over-promised and under-delivered in terms of accessing websites and streaming services from home on my android devices while travelling internationally. If the service provided by an application is geo blocked a VPN probably won’t help you because use of the device’s gps location service will likely be written into app preventing you from using it regardless. Also VPN use is problematic in some countries.

Horrible! Could not connect to open Wifi networks, tried everything suggested by their customer service, never worked! Data hog, 8 GB in 14 days. Custome service is bad, uses canned suggestions for fixes, that never work! If you try to get your money back, they beg for second chances over and over again, hoping you will give up on getting a refund. I used ExpressVPN but was looking for one that didn’t come under the 9/5 eyes. PureVPN was one choice that didn’t come under those jurisdictions, at least I hope they don’t ???? Since I use Linux, I was more concerned with my online security, I installed the service and got it up and running in no time. The download speeds are adequate for my use and a DNS leak test reveals there isn’t one, as for logging, they only log the connection and bandwidth which is hardly a security breach. I just wanted a VPN service that worked and for me PureVPN does the job.
