CactusVPN is a Moldova-based VPN service that started in 2011. It offers both VPN services and smart DNS. For the former, you get dedicated US and UK VPN plans. You can also sign up for a combined VPN/smart DNS plan.
One of the issues we found in our CactusVPN review is that it has a very small network. You only get 25 servers and 15 countries to choose from. Despite this concern, the provider has a good feature set that lets you use its network for most VPN applications.
We also took note of the issues regarding its logging policies. This might not always be a concern for some users, but you still need to take them into consideration. Beyond that, CactusVPN is going to be a good addition to the list of VPNs we recommend.
CactusVPN’s standard feature set includes:
While there isn’t anything in terms of advanced features, users will be able to use the VPN for most common applications with the above offerings.
The VPN also offers a smart DNS service. It claims to unblock more than 290 websites, including:
Aside from these major international sites, you can access regional channels from specific countries. CactusVPN even says that you can open multiple channels without having to change settings. The smart DNS is either bundled with any of the provider’s VPN plans or bought as a standalone service.
If you really want to unblock Netflix, we recommend these VPN providers for this instead.
For managing your connections, CactusVPN has a decent app.
It also lets you switch servers easier, you only choose your desired server on the list and click.
CactusVPN has a small network consisting of only 25 servers that cover 15 countries. These include:
While this is not at the same level as a provider like Private Internet Access that has thousands of servers, CactusVPN covers most of the popular locations. This would often be enough for people who plan to use the service for specific applications involving these locations.
CactusVPN claims to use 1Gbps servers on its network to provide high-speed connections. The site adds that these servers are managed by trained administrators to ensure they are working optimally. CactusVPN further states that it does not restrict speed and bandwidth on any server.
While these claims are impressive, the company does not provide any speed data on its pages. This means that new customers won’t know what speeds to expect before signing up.
CactusVPN does let you sort the server list on its app by speed, which will help you find the fastest one available. Until we get our speed data for this one, we advise that you be careful with your expectations for the service’s speeds.
CactusVPN offers four different service plans divided into three pricing terms. For the monthly plans, you get the following prices:
The quarterly plans offer these prices:
For the annual plans, you get these prices:
We like the variety of plans the company offers, particularly the fact that there are dedicated US and UK VPN services.
To purchase a plan, you need to create an account on the site. You can then pay using a variety of methods like:
The large selection of payment options makes it easy for you to sign up wherever you are. You can also register for a 24-hour free trial without the need for credit cards.
Another great thing about CactusVPN is that they do frequent giveaways. These giveaways range from discount codes to free months. They are typically done on the company’s Facebook page.
CactusVPN mainly dispenses customer support through a ticket system. Current customers have a dedicated ticket panel in their client dashboards for faster responses. There is also a separate contact form for visitors wishing to know more about the service before signing up.
Outside of direct customer support, the site has a learning center which provides a variety of self-help articles. These cover topics like setup and configuration, as well as troubleshooting. There are even configuration files to help you set up your protocols manually.
The company also says in its policy statement that it might respond to requests from authorities for personal data. As much as we like their service, this is a big issue. If you plan on using a VPN for sensitive work, we suggest you check out our list of no-logs VPNs for more secure options.
CactusVPN offers a 30-day money back guarantee on all of its services. It does provide some rules on when it does not accept refund requests:
To get a refund, you need to send a request using the support tickets.
Our CactusVPN review shows this one as a fairly decent provider. Despite its small network size, it has some good features, such as the standalone smart DNS service. We also like the varied plans that it offers.
There are, of course, some issues with the provider. The small network gives you very little option when connecting to other regions outside of the US and Europe. We are also concerned about some of its privacy policies. If you can get past those, however, CactusVPN is a good option on its own. There are, however, better choices you could make.
Our ratings for cactusvpn review are based on our professional experience and extensive tests with VPN providers between April 2014 – July 2014, taking into account user feedback and reviews we receive. As a friendly disclosure, some VPN providers do compensate us for customers we refer them, but this in no way effects their ranking on our website, nor our reviews.
