Clear VPN is a British VPN service that claims to provide a secure way for expats to unblock websites and download content from US, UK, and Canadian websites. The provider has been in business since 2009.
Clear VPN has several servers in all three countries, which is, in fact, its weakest aspect. The small number of countries and servers of Clear VPN can’t compete with larger providers which have many more servers in those three locations, and dozens more. All of Clear VPN’s features can also be found with most providers.
The price also comes off as being more expensive in light of the above issues. This is made worse by Clear VPN’s lack of defined policies. We find this provider underwhelming, and we recommend that you get a better option from our top providers list.
Clear VPN has a lean feature set. When you sign up, you will get:
These features are a far cry from what you will find with bigger providers, but fits well with Clear VPN’s claim of providing simple service to customers.
The provider states that its network can be used in a variety of applications. The most notable of these applications is the accessing of US, UK, and Canadian content from abroad. This includes popular channels like BBC, ITV, SyFy, CBC, and ABC. If this interests you, you’d be much better off going with Express VPN as they have over 2000 total servers in over 90 countries.
Another area where you can use Clear VPN is in making VoIP calls. ClearVPN says that you can unblock most popular VoIP applications with its service. It adds that your ISP will not be able to monitor you making such calls and limit your connections.
Clear VPN has arguably the smallest network we have seen so far. You only get three countries to connect to, namely:
Each of these locations contains at least two servers each. Users can connect to any of the servers from anywhere around the world.
The extremely limited number of countries and servers may be due to the company choosing to focus only on regions mostly accessed by customers. This, however, is not acceptable. Larger VPN providers, like CyberGhost, often have dozens of servers available for these three locations in addition to the ones that they have in other countries. This gives users more varied options.
Clear VPN does not provide any form of speed data within its pages. This makes gauging the level of its performance quite hard. For a niche service like Clear VPN, the lack of speed data is going to lessen its appeal further.
Clear VPN also admits that access to some sites it claims it can unblock is not always guaranteed.
It adds that an individual site can still find a way to prevent the VPN from connecting, or to block whole IP ranges. While we admire its honesty, this comes as another blow to Clear VPN’s reliability. They’re not growing or developing tech while VyprVPN has their Chameleon technology they built themselves to get around these very blocks.
Clear VPN offers only monthly contracts at $9.75 per month. When you sign up, your first seven days will be free of charge.
You will then be billed through PayPal for the monthly fee. For the features offered by this provider, we think that the price is too steep. You will be able to find more cost-effective alternatives from the top providers we have reviewed that combine a great service with low prices.
Clear VPN provides customer service only through a contact form. This form is too basic, with no way to direct your questions to specific departments. The site also doesn’t indicate the estimated waiting time before you get a response, which makes it less reliable for urgent situations.
The site also has a basic FAQ section which doesn’t provide detailed answers. There are a few reference articles, but they are scattered all over the site which can make things difficult for new users to find and read them.
Clear VPN has a short privacy clause, stating that it does not record the data you transmit or your activities. The site adds that the only personal information it monitors is the login details that you use to connect to its service. Clear VPN also says that it uses BlueSnap to handle payments, guaranteeing that it doesn’t have access to your banking details.
One thing we noticed is that the site doesn’t have a TOS (Term of Service) section. This can create lots of problems since customers won’t have a clear idea of the other policies enforced by Clear VPN. We suggest that you look for alternative providers that have defined logging policies and TOS for your security.
With Clear VPN covering just three countries, it comes off as a niche provider. Our Clear VPN review, however, showed that it even fails at that niche. The provider doesn’t offer much in terms of functionally, and pales in comparison to other companies that have larger networks.
Clear VPN also turns out to be less cost-effective than its competitors. Its price is too high for the features that it offers. There are also concerns about its lack of proper policy declarations. Because of these issues, we recommend that you choose better options from our main VPN providers page instead.
Our ratings for clear vpn review are based on our professional experience and extensive tests with VPN providers between April 2014 – July 2014, taking into account user feedback and reviews we receive. As a friendly disclosure, some VPN providers do compensate us for customers we refer them, but this in no way effects their ranking on our website, nor our reviews.
