One of the funniest things we read on their website was about geo-unblocking for Netflix. Even they admit that they’re not good at it and you should visit StrongVPN instead.

Encrypt.Me Review Summary

With offices in the USA, Encrypt Me is a VPN that has been around since 2011. They used to be known as “Get Cloak,” and “Cloak” before settling on Encrypt Me. The founders began the company out of a desire to create a simple to use VPN, with them saying they wanted to keep “personal information secure while working from coffee shops,” and they have succeeded at that goal at the least.

Encrypt Me VPN has a decent selection of countries, but we can’t figure out how many total servers they have as this information is not readily available on their website, or within their app. They have average customer support since they lack a live chat feature, and their prices are higher than most. They also log data for at least 16 days before deleting it.

We like Encrypt Me VPM, but our review found them to be pretty average in every category, and you’d find better choices on our main page for quality overall VPNs.

Encrypt.Me VPN Features

This Encrypt Me review may seem lacking in features, and it is because the provider is not looking to give them out. We scoured their website, looked through the settings of their app, and only found these features:

  • Auto-connect to unknown networks
  • OpenVPN encryption support
  • A firewall. Maybe

That’s it. This is really disappointing. They don’t mention any sort of kill switch, other encryption methods, leak protection, or anything else! We understand that they want to be simple, but we find this unacceptable as a VPN should be open about what they offer. They even have a section for “Advanced Users” in their help section, but it offers no real advanced information.

We are happy with how easily the app set up with just a few clicks, and it is generally pleasant looking, as you can see above. The only trick was being sure to agree to their T and Cs below.

ENCRYPT.ME VPN SERVERS & COUNTRIES

We know where Encrypt Me has servers, but only after downloading their app as the website shows a map without names. Their server locations include:

  • Europe: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK
  • Eastern Europe: Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine
  • Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, USA
  • Asia Pacific: Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa

There’s no denying that being in 35 countries is decent, but without any idea of how many servers they have in each country we can’t judge their true size. They do have multiple locations in the USA, UK, and Australia, but there just isn’t enough information anywhere to get an idea of the size of their network.

Reliability & Speed Tests

With all of these uncertainties surrounding their service, we knew had to to get our hands on it and really give it a working over. We did. Our speed tests were not that bad. Here’s the baseline for the connection on the day of testing:

Here’s the results when connected to the fastest server available:

Here is what we found when we connected to the fastest server in the USA:

These are all great results, but we were disappointed when we decided that we wanted to connect to a specific server in the USA. We used a server in Washington, DC and got speed test results at around 6-7GBps. That is dismal. You’re stuck with choosing the best server and going with it as some servers are just plain slow.

As for reliability, they did quite well. We left it on for days and didn’t have any drops. We’ll continue testing them and update as we go!

Pricing and Payments

With all of their work in being a simple VPN provider, they sure did fail when they set up their pricing structure. They have five different pricing categories, each with at least two sub-plans within it:

  • Passes/Subscriptions: One week $3.99, One Month $9.99, One year $99.99
  • Families: $12.99 per month, $149.99 per year – up to five devices
  • Teams: Slides from $15.98 per month for two members, to $1491.51 for 249 members
  • Mini Plan: $2.99 per month for 5GB per month

The Passes and Subscriptions packages differ in that a Pass is a one-time purchase, while a Subscription renews monthly or yearly. The one week package is only available as a Pass. The Mini Pass is, well, we don’t know what you’d really do with that besides secure a mobile phone you take to public spaces.

We have never, in all our time reviewing dozens of VPNs, seen a pricing structure quite like this. To break it down, their pricing is not great. They’re not cheap enough to be on our list of the Best Cheap VPN Providers, with what they’re offering the best price they do is $8.33 per month.

They accept credit cards, and you can pay through Apple’s App store.

Support

We weren’t happy with the support from Encrypt Me. They have a help center with a searchable database of articles, but we never seemed to be able to find the exact information we were looking for. What’s worse is how poorly organized it is.

Besides the help center, they also have email available at hello@encrypt.me. There’s no live chat support, no phone number, and no real indication that they’re a high-quality VPN provider.

POLICIES & LOGGING

A policy to make very clear, and that Encrypt Me states often, is that they do log your data for 16 days and delete it. They are not suitable for torrenting, if that’s what you’re after we suggest reviewing the best VPN providers for torrenting.

Other important policies include:

  • Spam: You can’t send any spam, or over-share your account to multiple people.
  • Refunds: They have a 30-day money-back refund policy.
  • Data sharing: All third-parties are blocked from accessing your data, and they will not share it or sell it. The exception is when given legal pressure to do so.

They make it clear that they’re not about hiding online activity, they’re about protecting online activity on public networks. They do store your data, they will share it with law enforcement, and they can’t be trusted for any real online work that demands secrecy.

Expert Recommendation

One of the funniest things we read on their website was about geo-unblocking for Netflix. Even they admit that they’re not good at it and you should visit StrongVPN instead. That about sums up our experience with Encrypt Me, in that they are indeed a VPN that can protect you online, but other VPN providers could do a better job.

Don’t get us wrong, they say what they will do and they do it well. The problem is that other VPN providers do those exact things, and more, at a better price. See our list of the 10 best VPN providers to find a perfect match for you.

Would do everything that I need if there were a Linux client

Rated 3 out of 5
August 7, 2019

I’m in my fifth year of using this service, having first signed up in 2015. Over the years, there have been periods when it worked better and others when it worked less well, but it’s been working just fine during the last few years. My problem is that my environment is evolving beyond the vendor’s capabilities: most importantly, the lack of a Linux client. Both my laptop and my NAS are running Linux variants, which means that I have to find a solution which will support those platforms, in addition to the Mac OS and iOS devices which I’ve mostly used when I’ve been traveling and forced to use public Wi-Fi networks. As my world evolves toward a private cloud model based on the NAS, I need secure, encrypted remote access to that server as much or more than I do when I use commercial cloud services. I can get that from OpenVPN, but not from encrypt.me; at least not now.

I am generally happy with Encrypt.me

August 7, 2019

I am generally happy with Encrypt.me. My only issues are some slow connection times while overseas. Also, locally I find it falls out from time to time. This means I need to be aware it is connected as it doesn’t always apply automatically. It’s no major issue; it just means being aware and manually connecting if using wifi outside of the home. Otherwise, I’m happy.

What happened to Cloak? 🙁

Rated 3 out of 5
August 6, 2019

The service used to work flawlessly. Recently, I notice a lot of interruptions though. Almost every other time I need to reinstall the VPN profile on iOS due to an “internal error”. Often the iOS app shows “no internet connection” although I am connected perfectly fine. I need to force shut the app and the it works sometimes; other times I need to move the slider in the app to on then back to off to get a connection. It is really irritating and I hope encrypt.me goes back to its roots, i.e. Cloak, that were the times…

The service works well

Rated 4 out of 5
August 6, 2019

The service works well. There are times on my cell phone, however, when Encrypt.me prevents me from making ANY connection. Usually, there are extenuating circumstances, such as a poor wi-fi connection. But it is difficult to stop my iPhone from trying to use VPN so that I can instead use the cellular connection. I usually can figure out a work-around, but my spouse would never be able to.
There is an option in the Mac version to trust a network that was previously considered untrustworthy, but I am unable to find that option in the iOS version.

For the most part a very good product

Rated 4 out of 5
August 5, 2019

For the most part a very good product.
The main issue I have with the product is that quite often the WIFI network is able to make a connection, but Encrypt.me cannot connect for some reason. Encrypt.me seems to infinitely block the working insecure connection while trying to connect. It would be better to time out and go back to a cellular connection, rather than blocking all data communication.
It would be nice to be able to connect to a server that can access VPN unfriendly sites like Netflix, etc. I realize that this is not your fault, but is a deficiency in the service.

Windows app is in Beta for years...

Rated 3 out of 5
August 5, 2019

1) Windows app is in Beta for years now. It seems like it is not a priority.
2) One huge thing for a common user is to be able to bypass geographical restrictions using a VPN service which you cannot promise, I understand that you market encrypt.me from a privacy and security angle but still there are times when I want to watch BBC iplayer and I just simply cannot do that with this app. Why can’t it do both functions?
3) Name is horrible. Cloak was a much better name.

I see the VPN memo bar app frequently disconnects

Rated 3 out of 5
August 5, 2019

I’ve been a subscriber to EncryptMe (fka Cloak) for a long time, and to varying degrees. However I see the VPN menu bar app frequently disconnect and attempt reconnect during minor usage. This happens when selected points are San Jose / San Francisco / Los Angeles in CA, Seattle WA, and Denver CO. Cannot use top level “fastest network” because then banks don’t recognize my connection. Providing a selection for regional fastest would probably be good for mitigating all of the above? There have been no updates to the app in a very long time to address things like this (presuming local machines could be partly at issue).

My experience with Encrypt.me is quite good. What I struggle with is to connect to networks that requires some kind of ”checkbox ticking”. These networks are blocked by default so I don’t see the UI.
