LiquidVPN Review Summary

LiquidVPN is a VPN provider based out of Michigan, USA. They are on the small side, but their aspirations are big as they have several interesting features as part of their package.

Their VPN client is top notch (and customizable), they offer multiple security features including ‘Modulating IPs’ (where you’re IP changes constantly to avoid tracking). Their prices are slightly below average as well (a nice plus) and their customer support is fantastic! Unfortunately, they fall short in multiple areas including reliability, slow connection, and limited server locations. Their terms and policies are decent, but not great.

We won’t completely recommend Liquid VPN just yet, but they’re definitely not bad and could be the right fit for you. Click the button below to visit them, or see our list of the five best VPN providers here!

LiquidVPN Features

Liquid VPN has an impressive feature set. They may be a small VPN, but that hasn’t held them back from building on what they offer their clients:

  • Support for OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSEC, and SSTP VPN tunnels
  • AES-256-CBC with SHA2 encryption
  • LiquidDNS: Their own zero-log DNS servers
  • NAT firewall
  • Modulating IP VPN Topology
  • Dynamic IP VPN Topology
  • Transparent DMCA complaint handling
  • Liquid Lock kill switch

This is a great list of features, and certainly puts them in contention for a spot on our list of the best VPNs for torrenting. A kill switch is so important for all P2P activity, and they have a custom on that’s sure to work.

LiquidVPN SERVERS & COUNTRIES

LiquidVPN has 40+ servers in 9 different countries. This is a low number on both counts. The countries they serve are:

  1. USA
  2. Canada
  3. UK
  4. Romania
  5. Switzerland
  6. Netherlands
  7. Germany
  8. Singapore
  9. Sweden

This means that those who are not in North America or Europe are going to have slow ping rates, and will likely experience some lag. If you’re an expat looking to unlock geo-blocked content in your home country, and it isn’t on the list, this isn’t the VPN for you. If you’re a world traveller looking to connect to any local server, this isn’t the VPN for you either, you’d be better off looking at IPVanish VPN, with server in over 60 countries.

They do, however, offer fast VPN servers right in the country of many VPN users. If you’re in North America or Europe, you’ll have access to a fast server near you.

Reliability & Speed Tests

LiquidVPN has speed problems, and this has been reported by other users. Here is an average speed rating on the connection used for testing, a 2Mbps restricted line, with no VPN:

Our Speeds Without a VPN

Here it is connected to a server in Switzerland:

Our Speeds Without a VPN

Here it is connected to a Modulating IP server in Switzerland:

Our Speeds Without a VPN

Here’s that same connection being tested again just a few minutes later:

Our Speeds Without a VPN

The high Ping rates are due to the tester being far from the VPN server. Given their very limited number of servers, this was the closest one available. The inconsistency in speed tended to be towards the slower side.

Numerous tests were done to check and make sure that the best situations were being used, but the results with a shared IP were consistently slow. It is below the performance of other VPN providers reviewed, with many only taking 10% off speed. With the modulating IP servers, it was anyone’s guess as to how it would perform.

Those with much faster connections, say in the 20Gbps range, found that the Modulating IP servers would severely limit speed. Some claiming a speed drop by as much as 70%. If you need privacy there are few options better than the Modulating IP tool, but it is not built for speed.

The connection that we had with Liquid VPN proved to be quite reliable. There were no dropped connections during our days of testing.

Pricing and Payments

LiquidVPN has three service plans available. All three are exactly the same, except for two differences. The standard features for each plan includes:

  • Unlimited monthly data
  • PPTP, L2TP/IPSEC, SSL/Open VPN connection
  • Access to all of their IP modulation features.

The similarities to the plans end there. Here are the three plans, and what is different about them:

  • SideKick: $6USD/Month – 1 Liquid VPN license for Mac and Windows. 2 open sessions at once.
  • Road Warrior: $10USD/Month – 1 Liquid VPN license for Mac and Windows. 4 open sessions at once.
  • Ultimate Plan: $18USD/Month – 2 Liquid VPN licenses for Mac and Windows. 8 open sessions at once.

These prices are slightly above the average for comparable plans. To look at it practically, your average user is going to sign up for the SideKick, use only one connection at once, and never use the second simultaneous connection.

It seems like a waste to not have an option for those who only want a single connection. We recommend seeing our list of the Best Cheap VPN plans for better options and prices.

Support

With a small team, LiquidVPN is able to offer customer support on a very intimate level. The owner himself is often involved in online customer support issues, making sure that everything is handled properly. Other support options include:

  • Manuals: A strategy employed by LiquidVPN is to have extensive manuals and ‘how-to’ videos for their VPN client. Users can read about all the intricacies of their VPN before they even install it in the Client Area once they have signed up.
  • Tickets: If you have issues you are able to open a Support Ticket right in the Client Area. This maintains an even communication flow – no emails from multiple sources. Everything is right in one area.
  • History: If you’re curious about past communications with them, they have a history of all emails sent between your email and their domain in the Client Area. It makes for a customer support experience that feels very neat and integrated, and can be a real help if you have the same problem twice.

For those who do not yet have an account with them, the only way that we can see to get in touch with them is via their sign up, or by contacting them over Twitter. There is no live chat support around to help you out at a moment’s notice. With a small team, there can also be some delays in how quickly they contact you back.

POLICIES & LOGGING

LiquidVPN’s policy in logging is that they keep no IP addresses, browsing history, or traffic data. They will only keep connection logs that deal with bandwidth usage, mostly for refund policy purposes:

  • Sign up data: Their signup process also supports privacy by only asking for a name and email address. Everything is all good on this front.
  • Abuse reports: If they do receive abuse reports about an account on their servers, LiquidVPN will block ports or nodes that belong to those who are guilty. P2P torrenting is allowed on all of their servers. LiquidVPN will also enable logging of timestamps, as well as local and remote IPs, when abuses are reported to them.
  • DMCA complaints: Are also publicly posted when received, along with the reply they send back.

Their privacy policy is an odd combination of privacy, and publicly available information that sent a mixed message to us. The important point here is that they keep no logs of browsing history or traffic data, which is good to read.

Expert Recommendation

LiquidVPN have a number of key benefits that any VPN user will enjoy:

  • Modulating IPs for increased privacy online
  • Good price points for individuals and larger companies
  • A great client which you can customize to your needs

Their limited server numbers in a very few countries, and speed consistency issues, really holds them back. Their “Code of Ethics” policy is also a confusing document which seems to cause them more harm than good. This type of information may, perhaps, be better inside of a regular Terms of Service document.

If you’re looking for a VPN provider with some innovative products and fresh ideas, LiquidVPN fits that bill. If you’re looking for a wide range of servers to use across the world, you will not be satisfied with them.

L2tp sstp and openvpn protocols allow accessing through the most secure firewalls. The client is available for multiple platforms, which is very convenient. It also provides zero logging smart dns. And the support is excellent. I’ll continue using it and suggest trying it!

Very Fast Service

Having less locations available than other services I was unsure as to whether the speeds would match up also, but I have been really surprised. Liquid VPN has so-far given me some of the best speeds of any VPN I have tried. Next I’ll be trying out changing the IP modulation options.

this makes everything very slow. I can’t even load videos while I’m using it even after trying several different servers. They also seem to pick at negative reviews such as complaining about positive reviews that users make of vpn apps they deem worse than this. However I’m not sure such apps exist. That just doesn’t strike me as professional.

Fast as hell and their IP Switching is nuts

Rated 5 out of 5
June 24, 2019

Their servers are very fast except the IP switching topology is a bit slower but the way it works is crazy. Unlike HMA where it switches the IP every X minutes and disconnects you to do it this all happens seamlessly and happens dozens of times a minute.

A Dream for Torrent Lovers like Myself

Rated 5 out of 5

At first, I couldn’t get my torrents running very well. I got in touch with tech support and changed the topology. Now I am seeing on average 245mbps download and upload on their Chicago servers on my 500mbps x 500mbps connection. That does not sound great but its the fastest service yet. I always have at least 2 VPN subscriptions. My main subscription and the one I am testing in hopes to find one that will give me closer to 500mbps. They dethroned AirVPN as my main service. I will continue to try new services and if one comes along that gives me better speeds I will switch but until that day comes I recommend Liquid to anyone that asks.

Although they don’t keep your usage logs, they do keep some of the connection logs. This means that they kept my login attempts and transaction information, such as your name, email address. This unacceptable to me. I dont like it at all.

It is true that they deal with abuse when detected. They say that in this case, they will share any transaction data with the proper authorities. Personally, I don’t think that it is the right way to go. There are better options for such cases.

Simply the best. I have used numerous paid VPN services including the big name, highly rated ones. Many were good, but for my needs LiquidVPN is the best. It is obvious that this company is serious about the privacy and security of its customers. The VPN is fast, secure and reliable. Customer service is outstanding.

Liquidvpn is rock solid

July 12, 2018

I’ve been using LiquidVPN for about a year. I have also used and or compared Nord, VPN. AC, IbVPN, PrivateVPN and TorGuard. I’ve found LiquidVPN to be one of the faster VPNs for me, and one of the most reliable. Customer service has been good and the selection options for protocols ports and the like is more than adequate.
LiquidVPN has never failed a leak test for me. Based on customer service communication and from what other customers say, I believe LiquidVPN is honest about their logging and data erasure policies. That said, they do need to update and improve their Android app and I wish they offered Proxies and built-in connections to TOR. I know multihop servers are gaining popularity and Liquidvpn has the servers to give basically the same anonymity without slowing down the connection as much as multihop does.
I highly recommend LiquidVPN

When I submitted a service ticket on why I could not get Netflix on my Android tablet (Samsung) I received the following message, “Netflix is supported on Windows and Mac. You are on an Android device so you will need to find a workaround.” At least they do have a 30 day refund policy.

You have no idea how many VPNS. I’ve been through the free no name VPNS, the free big no name VPNS, the paid big and small name VPNs! Not one had provided quick service and anonymity like you guys. I just hope you guys stay this way and not stray (like some certain VPN services) and have 3rd parties join that potentially can access the database of users when they like. I digress. I plan to never ever change my vpn service. You NEED liquid VPN if speed and anonymity is your top priority!! ☺

When it came down to server availability, speeds, and no logs I was stuck testing between Liquid and PIA. Liquid’s modulating IP’s are what worked for my plex server and I’ve never looked back. When they switched to this app it made it much simpler for me, although I feel openvpn had more options, but I flash ROMS constantly and always had to bring over my settings from my old phone for the VPN. Now, I download, log in, and connect. Yes you have to pay to those who complain about that, but you pay for privacy and peace of mind. Thanks liquid team and keep up the great work.

I signed up for Liquidvpn as I am a digital nomad – I work on the road. It did not work in Asia or South America. It flat out did not work. It took 3 weeks to get a, partial, refund. Horrible customer service, rude too… I played around with it at home, from the USA, and it was great. But, if you plan to travel and use VPN, I would use another service.

LiquidVPN - Liquid VPN Review - Don't even bother signing up with them

They do not honour their refund policy even when you meet the requirements. No questions asked… my ass.
Request for refund was made within the 7 days policy.
1. Refund was delayed as they said they do not keep Bitcoin in their wallet and it takes time to transfer from their bank.
2. Requested for an update one week later, no reply and my ticket was closed,
3. Started a new ticket and Mike Chamberlain replied that it takes time as they haven’t had a Bitcoin signup recently. Thus they could not refund.
4. 2 Weeks later. Asked for an update, no reply and the ticket was deleted.
5. Started a new ticket and this time Mike Chamberlain replied stating that BTC, Cash and other crypto currencies are not eligible for a refund.
This is mind boggling since he was the person who replied at (3). Secondly the TOS was changed after the request for a refund was made. In fact this line –
“We do not refund cash and other cryptocurrency payments”
was added after the 25th September 2015.
Here’s the link to Google cached page –
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:LvmzM9fy4s0J:https://www.liquidvpn.com/terms-of-service/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk
To add salt to the wound, he had tried to get me to retract a comment on vpncompare.uk (which was not published), before he would reinstate my account. Makes you wonder how independent and fair is that review when Liquidvpn would know about it even when its not published.
My account has since been locked which means I can’t even start a conversation with them regarding this. Even if I could, there isn’t much point in doing so, since they would either delete the support ticket and delay anything but refund.
They have basically accepted my money, provided no service and changed their TOS to legitimize their right to rob BTC. Imagine them doing that if I had paid by credit card or Paypal. They are able to get away with it because its BTC and most users who needs a VPN would rather pay via crypto currency
Unethical and obnoxious. Mike Chamberlain has tried to hoodwink and bully the refund from me. I would really think twice about trusting them with anything.
