OctaneVPN Review

OctaneVPN is a VPN service that has been around since 2012. It has a decently-sized network covering over 40 countries. The company provides a large variety of plans, including a custom plan that lets you get the service for a specific number of days.

We found OctaneVPN to be a fairly average provider with a standard set of features. It is easy to set up and will work in most applications. The included app is another worthy mention because of its simplicity.

OctaneVPN’s plans are reasonably priced, and the custom days option is a nice touch. We did have an issue with its logging policies, but this doesn’t detract much from our overall impression. The only big shortcoming of this provider is that it doesn’t have more advanced features like those found in the services included in our top recommendations list.

Features

OctaneVPN is a basic VPN provider with a standard feature set. It supports three popular protocols: PPTP, IPSec, and OpenVPN. While this list isn’t as numerous as those of other providers, the protocol types would suffice for most applications.

The site also gives you an app for managing your connections. It is easy to set up and straightforward to use. One nice feature of the app is that it lists the current speed of the different servers.

You can also create a group of your favorite servers for a more convenient way to launch connections.

Other features include:

  • 256-bit encryption
  • Five simultaneous connections
  • Unlimited data transfer
  • P2P support
  • Multiple platform support
  • DNS and IP leaks protection

While these features don’t stand out much when compared to other providers, they would be enough for giving you suitable protection when you go online.

Servers and countries

OctaneVPN has a decently-sized network comprised of 150 servers covering 44 countries. These countries include:

  • Austria
  • Brazil
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • South Africa

The distribution of the servers is fairly good, letting you access most regions.

OctaneVPN Servers

If you are looking for more locations, you might want to opt for other options like CyberGhost and their over 3,000 servers in 60 countries, offering wider coverage.

Speed and reliability

OctaneVPN claims to offer fast speeds for its servers. It adds that there are no speed limits when connecting to its network. There is no provided data, however, to back up these claims, which makes it hard to assess their validity. Until we get our own speed tests done, you need to temper your expectations on this provider.

OctaneVPN gives you a decent amount of server options with the network size that it has. The fact that OctaneVPN allows P2P traffic is also a nice bonus. The provider does recommend that you use a non-US server when using torrents due to some technical issues.

Pricing and payment

OctaneVPN has a large selection of plans, with options from several days to a whole year.

OctaneVPN Pricing

One option we particularly liked is the Custom Days plan. This one is really useful if you plan to use the VPN for a specific duration only.

The site lets you pay using credit cards, PayPal, and Bitcoin. You need to provide full billing details for credit card payments, while your email address is the only thing required for PayPal and Bitcoin payments.

Support

OctaneVPN provides support mainly through its online contact form. The form is very basic and doesn’t give you the option to direct messages to specific departments, so expect slow responses from time to time. You can also email your questions and concerns to support@octanevpn.com.

The site also provides a variety of guides for setting up its service. These guides are organized by platform and contain specific instructions for each protocol. There is also a guide for setting up the VPN on different routers.

Logging and policies

OctaneVPN’s privacy policy states that it does not log your sessions, including the sites you visit and the protocols you use. It does collect statistics on the number of connected customers and bandwidth used. The data is aggregated and does not contain information on individual users.

It is worth noting that the privacy policy also states that OctaneVPN does collect personal information when you register your account. This includes your name and email address. There is no mention of the storage period for the information, which can be an issue for some. If you want a truly no logs VPN, we recommend that you consider these options instead.

OctaneVPN has a straightforward refund policy. If you are a new customer, you can request a refund within seven days after your purchase. You can also cancel your account anytime using the account management system. The site closes accounts at the end of their current billing periods.

Expert recommendations

OctaneVPN doesn’t have much in the way of advanced features, though this is something we are not that worried about. Its feature set is fairly suitable for most applications, and its network has a decent size and covers most of the popular locations. Another thing we liked in our OctaneVPN review is the offered plans, especially the Custom Days plan. The sizable selection means you can find one that will suit your needs.

We did have a problem with OctaneVPN not being a true no-logs VPN since it still collects certain customer information. This provider is a decent option overall, but if you want a more capable option, you should take a look at our top 10 recommendations.
