OneVPN is a newer VPN provider in the industry which started in Hong Kong. The VPN is operated by a security firm called Unravel Technologies, which has been working in the online security industry since 2016. They have built a decent service in those few years, but there is still room for them to improve.
Our main issues were seeing a number of user complaints about customer response times, such as their live chat not actually being 24/7, and customer complaints about connection issues. Their website is also a bit unappealing due to numerous spelling and grammatical errors. With over 390 servers in 18 countries, they’re not a bad choice, there are just better choices in our list of the Top 5 VPN Providers.
Our OneVPN review should make it clear that they do have a good, or even great, set of features built into their VPN app. This includes:
Their built-in server speed test is a great feature as it allows you to see a real-time reading of server speeds based on your situation. This is important as it lets you easily find the best server to connect to based on what you’re trying to do. There’s no point in connecting to the fastest server in the UK when you want to use one in the USA, so instead you can see, find, and connect to the best server based on what you think you need.
Their torrent-poisoning awareness feature is also very interesting. This feature detects when seeders in a swarm are sending bad data and disconnects them from the swarm, protecting you from lost bandwidth and possible malware. With some improvement to their overall service, this feature could see them as one of VPNs listed on our Top VPNs for Torrenting list.
With over 390 servers, OneVPN puts themselves solidly in the mid-pack. With those servers covering 58 countries, they could rank even better with a few more servers in key locations.
Here’s a list of all the countries they cover:
They are currently in 15 different cities in the USA, with 5 servers for each city, making it the country with the most servers. If they could increase their numbers in the UK, Canada, and Australia like that they would rank much better.
We’d really like to recommend them to our friends in Australia, but for now we’d advise you to look at our reviews of the five best Australian VPNs.
OneVPN has a lot to say about their reliability and speed, and they try to back that up with speed test results within their app. They also claim up to 10GBps on most of their servers, but a little more of a breakdown would be appreciated.
Other claims on their website related to speed and reliability:
These are all great things, but we’d like to see them show information on server uptime. Having the fastest servers in the world won’t matter much if they drop connections often. We do still like that they make these claims about their speed so that they can be held accountable should issues arise.
OneVPN has a standard pricing structure, and prices a little below the average:
Out of all the points here in our OneVPN review, this is where they have the biggest advantage. These are great prices, but their overall service isn’t quite good enough to be on our list of the best Cheap VPN Providers yet.
Where they really shine is with their payment options:
There are very few VPNs which offer to accept this many payment options. Gift cards allow for very anonymous purchases, as does Bitpay.
Our review of OneVPN’s customer support is much like those of other users: There’s just not enough. They write all over their website about 24/7 support, but we certainly didn’t find that when we contacted their live chat. No one was live.
Other methods of support include:
We would feel better about them if their live chat was actually 24/7, or if they just gave their actual business hours. They could also do better with an FAQ section.
We reviewed two documents from OpenVPN that cover their policies and logging. They took some time to figure out as they were clearly written in another language before a direct translation tool was used. He’s what we understood:
These are very reasonable policies, but we really need to see them put more effort into them. To start with, they need to be gone over by a Native English speaker.
Our OneVPN review should come across as generally positive, but not overly enthusiastic. They’re a good VPN provider, with great features for torrenters and streamers, but they just don’t have the server network to truly excel. There’s also the problem of their website being written poorly, which robs them of a sense of professionalism.
With improvements to their customer support, which is lacking, and server network, they could rank highly on our Top 10 VPN Provider list. Their low pricing would also see them rank well. For now, they’re just an ok choice with better options available.
Our ratings for onevpn review are based on our professional experience and extensive tests with VPN providers between April 2014 – July 2014, taking into account user feedback and reviews we receive. As a friendly disclosure, some VPN providers do compensate us for customers we refer them, but this in no way effects their ranking on our website, nor our reviews.
