VyprVPN does many things very well, and their partnership with SpiderOak for encrypted storage is a real bonus. Use it if you need encrypted storage that is also transported with top-notch encryption. With 15+ years of experience in the Internet industry, and a strong dedication to privacy from spying, VyprVPN offers you an exceptional Tier-1 network. Everything you do with them, including billing, their server network, and support, is handled by VyprVPN and the Golden Frog Network parent company. VyprVPN can't be recommended to those who wish to do torrenting or P2P file sharing. This against their Terms of Service. With their logging policy also clearly established, it is not hacker or spammer friendly at all. They will use their logs to work with law enforcement when a subpoena is presented to them. VyprVPN is recommended for those who want to do general browsing, video streaming, and to unlock geo-blocked content. It is also great on public Wi-Fi for anti-hacker defense. They have above-average pricing, but their extra features and Tier-1 network do make them a good deal if you are looking for exactly what they offer.

CyberGhost VPN are definitely a top 5 VPN provider. Reading their privacy policy, and the fact that they do allow p2p and torrenting traffic on nearly all servers, you may rank them as your top choice for a VPN if you do a lot of downloading. Their software has features, like their killswitch, that put them on par with the top of the line Hide My Ass software. For fun, they also have a cute the animation that makes the experience that much more pleasant. They also benefit from being located in Romania as this country is well known for online privacy rights. What’s holding them back from the top spot is their connections do drop slightly more often than IPVanish and Hide My Ass. Their VPN Kill Switch does save you from being exposed, but no problems would be better than a solution to a problem. For the price you pay for their VPN service, one of the lowest in the industry, and all the features of their software, you can’t go wrong when you choose CyberGhost as your VPN provider.

Private Internet Access chose to do one thing very well, and it has succeeded. It is perhaps the most anonymous, private, and confidential of all the VPN providers out there, and this has built great trust amongst those in the VPN community and industry. Their simplistic software lends itself well to beginners, while more advanced users will be turned off by the lack of error notifications. Setting everything up is a breeze no matter your experience level, and anyone could connect to a VPN server in minutes. If you want complete anonymity on the Internet, you don’t need to look any further than Private Internet Access. The slower P2P traffic, lack of advanced features, and low diversity of countries with servers (just 33) are the only things holding the company back from the top of every VPN provider list.

StrongVPN offers one of the most comprehensive VPN services in the world. Their network is good, spanning 24 popular countries, while still retaining adequate speed and reliability. StrongVPN’s VPN software is adequate, but switching between servers is clunky. Their pricing is about average, but you really get a great VPN service in return. We would recommend StrongVPN for most users, especially if your main usage is browsing, video/music streaming (such as Netflix), or traveling internationally while wanting to unlock content in your home country. They do not rank higher because nothing that they do really stands out. Their software is adequate, but doesn't have the advanced features or smooth functionality of those which we rank higher. They don't have an excessive exceptional price for this lower level of client, so they are going to remain ranking right around mid-pack.

FAQs for the Best VPN for Mac

Should I buy a VPN for Mac?

Yes! Whether you need greater online security, or want to keep your Internet activities private, a premium VPN is always a better option than a free one. Paid VPNs also have advanced features not found in free ones like:

    • – Enhanced user dashboards: Users can control and manage all their connections in a single dashboard, which also handles other network activities.
    • – Kill switches: Many paid VPN services have automated kill switches that cut off your connection entirely if the VPN server drops to protect you from potential data leaks. This feature is absolutely essential if you want the most possible protection.
    • – IP address changing: Users can have their IP addresses automatically changed at specified time intervals, making it harder for hackers and spies to track their activities.
    • – NAT firewalls: Network Address Translation firewalls make it easier for multiple devices to use a single VPN connection while also providing additional data filtering and protection.

These advanced features make paid VPNs suitable for a large variety of applications. VPNs for Mac and Apple devices are also affordable. The best ones will cost you only around $3 to $8 per month. Combined with the above features, they give you a lot of value for your money.

How does a VPN work on a Mac?

Virtual private networks (VPNs) for Macs work essentially the same as VPNs for other computer systems, meaning they encrypt your connection and mask your IP address. They are useful for different purposes where you might want increased security or anonymity like:

    • – Connecting to public Wifi: VPNs can protect your devices from potential data harvesting attacks that are made through public Wifi connections.
    • – Accessing location-locked content: Many people use the IP address masking capabilities of VPNs to connect to sites not normally accessible in their countries, a practice known as geoblocking.
    • – Increasing privacy: VPNs can be used for anything from hiding your location to protecting sensitive data that you send across the Internet.

These uses make VPNs an indispensable tool for both individual Mac users and companies.

Are VPNs safe to use on a Mac?

Yes. In fact, VPNs offer several important security benefits, such as:

    • – Greater anonymity: VPNs are more effective in hiding your browsing activity and information than proxies.
    • – Protection from security attacks: Good VPN providers offer a variety of security features that work to block viruses, malware, and other attacks on your Mac.
    • – Increased performance: Using a VPN will help you maintain a stable Internet connection and improve your connection speeds.

These security features are some of the biggest draws of using VPNs for many people.

Do note that the features above will vary from one VPN provider to the next. Study each provider using our reviews above to find out which ones have the best security.

Are there any free VPNs for Macs?

Yes, there are, but these free VPNs have certain limitations like:

    • – Slower speeds: Free VPNs are usually throttled down so as to not compete with paid ones or because of resource limits.
    • – Fewer features: Some of the more advanced features found on paid VPNs are not always present in free ones, like multiple connections and a choice of different servers.
    • – Ads: Some free VPNs stream several ads before you can connect to a server, which can be annoying. They can also have pop-up ads during your browsing, which is just awful.
    • – More prone to attacks: Due to the lack of certain security features, free VPNs have greater risks of being penetrated by viruses and hackers.

While free VPNs are useful for basic connection purposes, these limitations make them less reliable for long-term use.

What is the best VPN for Mac?

While many providers are offering VPN services for Mac users, we found those listed above to be the best from our testing and research. Check our detailed reviews of these providers to see their full list of features and decide which ones would best suit your specific needs.

Take the time to consider if you want to torrent files, have a no-log policy in place, or if you want to stream quickly.

    Does a Mac have a built-in VPN?

Yes, it does. The latest versions of the Mac OS X operating system has the “vpnd” daemon that you can use to turn your computer into a server. Note that this feature is designed only for creating a home VPN and connecting your devices to it. If you need to connect to the Internet in a protected manner, you still need to use a separate VPN service.

How do I enable VPNs for Mac?

Hooking your Mac up to a VPN is an easy process. To connect:

1: Open the Apple menu on your desktop, then choose Network Preferences.
2: Click on Network to open your network settings panel.
3: Select your desired VPN server in the list of connections.
4: Choose the connection configuration you want in the pop-up menu.
    5: Click connect.

This setup is for manually establishing a VPN connection. In some cases, your VPN provider might send a settings file for enabling your connection, while most have their own custom software to download to make the experience very easy.

If your chosen provider has a dedicated app, you can download the app and use it to automatically set up the connections for you. Depending on the provider, the app also lets you select and switch to another server without having to reconfigure your settings manually.
