IPVanish excells at three very important things for a VPN provider: The reliability of their connection The speed of their connection Their dedication to privacy and anonymity Putting those three together with their competitive pricing, and their exceptional Tier-1 network, and you have a VPN provider that ranks at the top of our list, and that should rank at the top of yours. To summarize IPVanish in one sentence: They do everything a VPN provider should, and they do it better than anyone else. IPVanish is one of the best VPN Providers, the fastest we tested and they had one of the best customers support teams in the industry. Highly Recommended!

Conclusion

CyberGhost VPN are definitely a top 5 VPN provider. Reading their privacy policy, and the fact that they do allow p2p and torrenting traffic on nearly all servers, you may rank them as your top choice for a VPN if you do a lot of downloading. Their software has features, like their killswitch, that put them on par with the top of the line Hide My Ass software. For fun, they also have a cute the animation that makes the experience that much more pleasant. They also benefit from being located in Romania as this country is well known for online privacy rights. What’s holding them back from the top spot is their connections do drop slightly more often than IPVanish and Hide My Ass. Their VPN Kill Switch does save you from being exposed, but no problems would be better than a solution to a problem. For the price you pay for their VPN service, one of the lowest in the industry, and all the features of their software, you can’t go wrong when you choose CyberGhost as your VPN provider.

StrongVPN offers one of the most comprehensive VPN services in the world. Their network is good, spanning 24 popular countries, while still retaining adequate speed and reliability. StrongVPN’s VPN software is adequate, but switching between servers is clunky. Their pricing is about average, but you really get a great VPN service in return. We would recommend StrongVPN for most users, especially if your main usage is browsing, video/music streaming (such as Netflix), or traveling internationally while wanting to unlock content in your home country. They do not rank higher because nothing that they do really stands out. Their software is adequate, but doesn't have the advanced features or smooth functionality of those which we rank higher. They don't have an excessive exceptional price for this lower level of client, so they are going to remain ranking right around mid-pack.

Conclusion

VyprVPN does many things very well, and their partnership with SpiderOak for encrypted storage is a real bonus. Use it if you need encrypted storage that is also transported with top-notch encryption. With 15+ years of experience in the Internet industry, and a strong dedication to privacy from spying, VyprVPN offers you an exceptional Tier-1 network. Everything you do with them, including billing, their server network, and support, is handled by VyprVPN and the Golden Frog Network parent company. VyprVPN can't be recommended to those who wish to do torrenting or P2P file sharing. This against their Terms of Service. With their logging policy also clearly established, it is not hacker or spammer friendly at all. They will use their logs to work with law enforcement when a subpoena is presented to them. VyprVPN is recommended for those who want to do general browsing, video streaming, and to unlock geo-blocked content. It is also great on public Wi-Fi for anti-hacker defense. They have above-average pricing, but their extra features and Tier-1 network do make them a good deal if you are looking for exactly what they offer.

Private Internet Access chose to do one thing very well, and they have succeeded. They are perhaps the most anonymous, private, and confidential of all the VPN providers out there, and this has built great trust amongst those in the VPN industry. Their simplistic software lends itself well to beginner users, while more advanced users will be turned off by the lack of error notifications. Setting everything up is a breeze no matter your experience level, and anyone could connect to a VPN server in minutes. If you want complete anonymity on the Internet, you don’t need to look any further than PIA. Their slower P2P traffic, lack of advanced features, and low diversity of countries with servers (just 25), is the only thing holding them back from the top of every VPN provider list.

ExpressVPN are an above average VPN provider with a software package that will satisfy the new VPN user. Those with more experience may be bothered by the lack of clear direction as to which features their software has. Use ExpressVPN if you want:

    • A ‘one button’ approach to connectivity.
    • A consistent connection speed with few drops.
    • To be able to download via P2P and torrenting.
    • A wide range of server host countries to unlock geo-blocked content.
If you’re willing to pay a premium price for the simplicity of their simple software package, and huge VPN server numbers, this is a good VPN choice for you.

Conclusion

If HideIP VPN's network had continued growing, instead of the contraction in the last year, they could have moved up in our rankings. They have a good client, with decent features, and a slightly confusing pricing structure, but that could've been overcome by some sort of growth. The ownership of the service, or at least those who claim to be owners, are not forthcoming with the location of their offices. This could be a bit of a concern, they list Moldova and the USA as founding locations, but will not say where their offices are. As it stands, they are an adequate VPN provider, but nowhere near a match for your money when compared to IPVanish.

ProXPN is a middle-of-the-road VPN provider with a slightly above average price. While they don't do anything poorly, there's nothing which they excel at in any particular way. Their no-log policy is appreciated, as is their VPN Guard technology which functions much like the VPN killswitch of the top VPN providers. Positives: Norton is a name which you know that you can trust in the digital security world. While their VPN service is new, you can trust that their no-logging policy, as well as their money back guarantee, are genuine. The built in killswitch is going to help out everyone who uses this VPN. Their ad blocking technology is also a nice little touch. Negatives: While their client is very reliable, it lacks options that an advanced user would want. For the VPN novice this could actually be ideal as it takes a lot of worry out of their hands. P2P and torrent users will be disappointed that they can’t do this over the service. Final word: The ideal Norton WiFi Privacy user is someone who is already familiar with all of their other security products. We would like to encourage anyone who has another product from them to also add this to their stable of security tools. Anyone who is new to the VPN world would also be wise to choose them as their provider.

Mullvad are serious about privacy and anonymity. They do that with their dedication to OpenVPN encryption. That encryption level along with a cash payment method, no logging policy, and allowance of p2p makes for a very private VPN experience. Where they stumble is with their low country server location number )24), and low overall VPN server count. There are many VPNs that have high privacy standards, and they all offer more servers in more countries which opens up more chances to get around geo-blocking. If you’re in one of the countries where they have servers, and only want to unlock content from those countries, they are recommended. Mullvad is a VPN that we definitely want to comtimue watching, as we have been since they started out with servers in 4 countries. With a few more servers in a few key locations, they may just find themselves shooting up our rankings even further.

FAQs about the top 10 VPN providers

What is a VPN and how does it work?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN is software that allows users to access the Internet safely. A VPN encrypts your data as it leaves your network, and protects you further by hiding your IP address and routing your connections through its server. This is how a VPN succeeds at protecting your online activity:

  • Step 1: The user starts that VPN software from the VPN service.
  • Step 2: The VPN then encrypts the data even before the ISP can index it.
  • Step 3: The data goes to the VPN. From the VPN server, data goes to the user’s online destination.
  • Step 4: The online destination receives the data and interprets it as if the data was coming from the VPN server and its location, not from your computer and your original location.
  • Step 5: THe whole process is done in reverse and decrypted so that you can enjoy whatever content you were looking for!

A VPN is also useful for helping users bypass Internet censorship, gain access to geo-blocked networks, and safely download content. Read about the best VPNs available by looking at our reviews above right now!

What is the purpose of a VPN?

The purpose of a Virtual Private Network is to allow its users to use the Internet in a private and secure manner. In simple terms, the purpose of the VPN is to be the third party that connects to the Internet on your behalf. VPNs have many purposes which are vital to people from all walks of life:

  • – Shield your online activity from prying eyes.
  • – Protect your sensitive information like passwords, login credentials, emails, etc.
  • – Help you access geo-restricted websites.
  • – Safely download online content.
  • – Watch streaming media like Netflix and Hulu.
  • – Bypass Internet censorship based on country restrictions.

Keeping you private and safe is the main concern of a quality VPN. The VPN makes sure that its users enjoy full anonymity, while also allowing you to circumvent certain Internet censorships and access geo-blocked content.

How do I choose the best VPN service for me?

There are many quality VPNs out there, and choosing one which is right for you is no simple task. The best way to make sure you have chosen the perfect VPN service for you is to take several factors into account:

  • – How many servers the VPN has.
  • – Make sure they offer unlimited bandwidth.
  • – Make sure they offer a friendly user interface.
  • – Make sure your important locations are included.
  • – Decide which payment plans you’re comfortable with.
  • – Find a VPN with a reliable customer support service.
  • – Find a VPN with a solid refund policy.

Once you assess your VPN needs, you will be able to choose the ideal VPN service. If you need more help deciding which VPN to choose, read the reviews above of some of the most dependable VPN services. By reading our reviews, you will be better prepared to make a well-informed decision and find the perfect VPN service for you.

What are the common features of a good VPN provider?

Every VPN service is unique, and providers differ in the features they offer. However, there are critical features that you should look for in a quality VPN provider:

  • – Mobile apps
  • – Router support
  • – Unlimited bandwidth
  • – Good customer support
  • – Total privacy with no logs
  • – Free trial
  • – Money-back guarantee
  • – Supported on multiple devices
  • – Kill-switch
  • – Impressive speed

There are a variety of ways by which you can determine which VPN suits you. The best way is to determine what you’re looking for in a VPN and then decide which one best aligns with your needs.

How much does a VPN service cost?

Although you can find free VPN services, they almost always come short when it comes to offering quality protection. Most the time they are either data-capped, harvesting your data to sell, or so slow they’re not worth your time.

The price of the paid subscriptions that a quality VPN provider offers varies, but you can usually find a good solution for your VPN needs for somewhere around $3 to $7 per month. Good VPN providers also offer annual plans which are considerably cheaper compared with their monthly subscriptions. You can find out the prices of some of the best VPN providers by reading our reviews above.

Is a VPN the same as proxy servers?

Even though both VPN and proxy servers offer online anonymity, they differ in some very important and fundamental elements:

  • – Proxy: A proxy will only disguise your IP address while leaving your online activities unmasked. They offer no encryption against any spying from anyone whatsoever.
  • – VPN: A VPN encrypts the data your device transmits and erases any traces of your online activity, making it virtually impossible for hackers to access your data.

The VPN also hides your IP address by providing an alternate IP address from the VPN service to your online destination. The main difference between a proxy and a VPN is that while the Proxy hides your IP address, it leaves your online activity exposed for the public, while the VPN both hides your IP address and protects the data from your online activity.

Is it legal to use a VPN?

With a few exceptions, using a VPN is perfectly legal in most countries. There are currently no laws prohibiting the use of a VPN service in:

  • – US
  • – Canada
  • – Europe
  • – UK
  • – Australia

There a few which restrict or outlaw their use, and I’m betting you can guess which (UAE, Iran, China…)

How do VPNs help with geo-blocked content?

Geo-restricted content is used on websites and prevents certain visitors from accessing the website, buying products, or certain services. For instance, if Netflix is restricted in your country, you can’t access it without using a VPN. In this situation, a VPN helps by providing your device a private and secure Internet connection so that others can’t see your information or location.

The best way to make sure that a certain VPN service will allow you to access your desired geo-blocked content is to make sure that the VPN service provides access to the geo-blocked content in your specific country.

Should I use a VPN while torrenting?

Yes, you absolutely MUST. One of the perks of using a VPN is that it allows you to download content on the Internet safely. For instance, if you wanted to use The Pirate Bay without getting into any legal trouble, using a quality VPN service is the best way to do it. We can help you find some of the best VPNs in the industry that allow you to use The Pirate Bay safely and privately.
